‘Shahji Ki Kothi’ to become a memorial soonBack

Finally Shahji Ki Kothi, a mansion in Chowk which encapsulates a literary history, has got approval for renovation. This renowned Kothi was the place where Amrit Lal Nagar, the Hindi litterateur spent 33 years of his life as he shifted here in 1957 and lived here till his last breath in 1990. The state government has directed the cultural department to submit a report on converting it into a memorial.
The building has a distinctive architecture, with fishes on its arch and five huge courtyards that had witnessed many literary discussions and dramas, which are rare to find in modern day architecture. The pillars of the building are made in Roman architectural style.
This Kothi has been a part of many popular films also like Satyajit Ray’s ‘Shatranj ke Khiladi’ and Shyam Benegal’s ‘Junoon’, which made this building eternal in the memory and not only Hindi but portions of a Tamil film, ‘Nandu’ were also shot here.
